The First Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most sought after holiday of the year. People in the United States are celebrating this special day on the fourth Thursday of November. But do you ever wonder how Thanksgiving Day originates?
According to Historians, the Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving. These pilgrims arrived in North America in December 1620. They had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to reach the North America on the ship named “Mayflower”. They celebrated the first thanksgiving in 1621 with Wampanoag Indians as they shared an autumn harvest feast. The harvest meal has become the symbol of interaction between the colonists and Native Americans. The Wampanoag Indians had taught the Pilgrims to cultivate the land. The first thanksgiving lasted for about three days.
Historians are not quite sure of the menu that had been served during this historical event. According to historians, there are two food items that were surely present in the menu, these are venison and wild fowl. The pilgrims did not use forks at that time. They only used spoons, knives and their fingers. They also used napkins to wipe their hands and to pick up hot pieces of food.
The harvest meal becomes the first Thanksgiving Day. This event has been celebrated annually and in 1789, President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation.
