World AIDS Day Theme: Universal Access and Human Rights

worldaidsday

December 1 is World AIDS Day. The world is celebrating this special event each year to raise the awareness of everybody regarding the spread of this infectious disease. Some of the activities are to commemorate the death of those who died from HIV/AIDS, special forum with AIDS topic and conduct speeches. The President of United States declared December 1 as World AIDS Day in 1995. This has been followed by other nations and this day has become the official World AIDS Day.

What triggers the government to conduct such awareness program is the alarming number of people who died because of this disease. According to some surveys, this disease has killed more than 25 million people from 1981 to 2007. More than 33.3 million people are now suffering from this disease. This makes AIDS a certified destructive disease in the human history.

To prevent the spread of this disease, international organizations such as United Nations have exerted continuous effort to inform everybody about this disease and to alleviate the number of victims. Through this program, the number of people affected by such disease has been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. However, the battle is not yet over as HIV infections are still raising in some countries despite the awareness program.

Every year, World Aids Day has been celebrated with a theme. The World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee will choose the theme for this special event. This year’s theme is “Universal Access and Human Rights”.

Global leaders promised to focus on the treatment of such disease. The treatment should be available in every country. The prevention and care of such disease should be available to everybody as these elements will represent the basic human rights. Everybody has the right to be treated and should have an access with HIV and AIDS treatment. Regardless of whether you are rich or poor, whether you are living in a low-, middle- or high-income country, or regardless of whom you are, you have the privilege to be informed and to be treated with HIV disease. That is what this year’s theme is aiming for.

Just because you don’t have AIDS doesn’t mean you should not mind this event. The World AIDS Day always gives everybody the opportunity to be informed, whether to individuals, communities and political leaders. Everybody must be wary of the spread of this disease. The only way to alleviate the number of victims is to protect the human rights. Everybody must have an access and must be protected with such disease. If we are going to unite and will care for each other’s right, we can surely eliminate this disease. Everybody has the right to be treated with HIV/AIDS.

It is nice to know that many are now aware of AIDS and how it is transmitted, transferred and avoided. Awareness and unity are the keys for this problem to be solved.
