It’s a coconut, no it’s an Octopus. Have you ever seen a swimming coconut? Yes, a swimming coconut. This is a recent discovery by Australian Scientists in Indonesia. This discovery is somehow odd for the scientists, odd in the sense that it is an octopus collecting coconut shells for their shelter. According to researchers, this kind of behavior is evidence that invertebrate animals are using tools. What they are actually doing is that they will collect halved coconut shells in the sea floor, then they will clean it up, empty any content then they will carry it under their bodies up to 20 meters. They will then assemble these two shells together which they can use to hide themselves.
This is actually common for octopuses. They are fond of collecting objects for their hiding spots and stay in one place. But the veined octopus displayed more interesting behavior. They are not only staying in one place with their hiding spot but they carry it along with their bodies in the seafloor. They look like a coconut swimming in the sea.
According to researchers, all creatures are using shells in the same way. They are using it as a shelter or a protection. When human beings began to cut coconuts in half and throw it in the ocean, it gives way for the octopuses to discover something better for their shelter. Creatures like this are capable of complex behavior. They are intelligent and they have good sense of vision. The use of such tool of the octopuses displays their behavioral capabilities.
The finding about the vein octopuses interests the scientists. It simply shows that humans and other creatures are similar in some way. Anything that humans can do can also be done by other creatures.
